I charge £30 an hour, which is based on the rates suggested by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (of which I am a member) and the NUJ.
I usually proofread at a speed of between 2,000 to 4,000 words an hour (this is based on the density of the work and how many edits are needed).
I always keep track of the number of hours I spend on a clients’ work and I’m happy to agree a cap on price (based on my slowest reading rate) so that you know what the worst-case scenario will be in terms of the final bill.
While I always try to complete a project in the fewest possible hours, I never place speed over quality. That’s why I like to offer a capped and ranged price structure. That way you won’t have any surprises even if the job takes me longer than I expected.
